What a conversion can and cannot change
Every stitch format stores the same thing at heart: a list of needle positions in 0.1 mm steps with commands between them for colour changes, jumps and trims. Converting keeps every position; what differs is the metadata each container can hold. DST and EXP have no colours, only stops. PES stores colours as an index into Brother's 64-entry palette and JEF into Janome's 79-entry chart, so a thread becomes the nearest entry on the way in. VP3 and TBF carry thread names; XXX carries RGB. DST records cannot move more than 12.1 mm, so longer stitches are written as two.
That is the whole list. A conversion does not resize (which changes density), does not re-digitise, and does not improve a badly digitised file.
